Cat and Dog

Have you ever wondered why the cat and the dog are perceived by mankind to be mortal enemies?

Man even invented an idiom—passed on through generations—to dramatize this animosity between the two most popular pets in the world: Fighting like cat and dog! (meaning, to argue violently all the time). We have  translated this into our own Filipino language: Away nang away na parang aso't pusa!

I, too, find myself using this idiom, but then I became an internet denizen and found hundreds of photos such as these:

Now it's all a mystery to me why this idiom ever came about. Could it be the dog's penchant for running and chasing fast moving objects—and cats are one of them? Maybe.

But from today, I will delete that idiom from my mind's hard disc. Both animals come into our homes and reward our lives with the warmth of grace and unconditional love.

(JR's dog, Attorney, playfully runs around with the stray cats that visit our garden every so often. Attorney plays with chickens, too—but that's another story.)

“Then God said, 'Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.' And that is what happened. God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.”  Genesis 1:24-25

Interesting, Grace, we also use the same idiom in Indonesia, even in our Javanese language! I think if the cat and the dog lives in the same house and loved by the owner, they also learn to love one another. And so do we... we are different but so loved by the Owner, and we are learning to love one another. Thank you, Grace. And the photos so cute!

By the way, recently I regularly highlight a small part of your beautiful writings in writersgroups.wordpress.com and linked them to your lovely blog. I hope you don't mind. :) Thank you, Grace.

It's awesome just thinking how we are loved by the same Owner who saved us all, despite our differences--and failings! May we learn to love one another as cats and dogs do.

Thank you for the linkages, Eva; I really appreciate it.

Miss Grace, I have a dog named Beijing and a cat named Tien Fang. Tien Fang's mom left her in our garage. We always separated Tien Fang from Beijing for fear of the "cats and dogs" thingy. But one day, we just saw Tien Fang being cleaned up by Beijing. Sadly, Beijing died, and three days after, Tien Fang died, too. Now they are in heaven, indeed romping with the rest of creation, with their new Master!

How beautiful that time shall be when we will all be together with God's creation, and most of all, with Jesus!
