Too Many Bibles?

One can't have too many Bibles—not if they come in different translations.

The reported numbers vary, but it is safe to say that there are over 450 English translations of the Scriptures today, and counting.

I got my 19th Bible translation as a Christmas gift from son #1, JC. It's NLT (New Living Translation), which I already have, but with a difference.

This new one is a devotional Bible. Meaning, it is divided into 365 days. And each day has an additional spiritual resource—a specially chosen article from among the many issues of “Our Daily Bread.”

It was released only in October last year that's why it isn't available locally yet. JC had to wait a long time for the Bible to arrive from Amazon. He gave it to me three weeks after Christmas, so I started with January 10, then maybe go back to January 1 in between days to get on the right schedule.

Having 19 Bible translations gives me 19 different ways to enjoy the Word of God.

My main Bible is the KJV, but when there are parts I can't grasp too well, I turn to the others for better understanding. Each one likewise helps me as I seek Bible truths for the books that I continue to write.

John 1:16, for instance, illumines even more greatly when we read it in various translations.

“And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.” (KJV)

“For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” (ESV)

“Because he was full of grace and truth, from him we all received one gift after another.” (NCV)

“Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.” (NIV)

"We all live off his generous bounty, gift after gift after gift." (The Message)

And from my new Our Daily Bread Devotional Bible, NLT:

“From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.”

Too many Bible translations? To a student of the Word, every Bible resource is grace.

How rich and alive and new---with each translation, and everytime we read the Word. But no matter the translation, everything just funnels down to your heart as His pure word, nothing extra, nothing lacking. Just enough to hang on one's faith for the day.

Language truly fascinates me. It can say one thought in thousands of ways. But the meaning remains the same. No translation can thwart God's intent and His message to His children.
